The prevalence of SMI among women aged 18 or older (5.6 percent) was higher than that among men in that age group (3.0 percent).
Among boys aged 18 to 22 in 2008, full-time college students and those not enrolled full time in college did not differ significantly in their rates of past month cigar smoking (18.0 and 18.5 percent, respectively). However, cigar use by boys in this age range who were not enrolled full time in college declined from 2007 (21.7 percent) to 2008 (18.5 percent).
Smoking freebase cocaine produces a more powerful effect more rapidly, but it is also more dangerous because the safe dose can easily be exceeded.
Nationally in 2002, about 3.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older were dependent on or had abused illegal drugs in the past year. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of illegal drug abuse or dependence for persons aged 12 or older (4.3 percent), and Kansas had the lowest rate (2.5 percent). Most of the States in the highest fifth were in the West (six States). Only four of the States in the top fifth for illegal drug dependence or abuse also were in the top fifth for alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older: District of Columbia, Montana, New Mexico, and Rhode Island. Rhode Island had the highest rate for illegal drug dependence or abuse among persons aged 18 to 25 (13.9 percent); Vermont had the highest rate among teens (8.8 percent). The rate of past month tobacco use among teens aged 12 to 17 decreased from 12.4 percent in 2007 to 11.4 percent in 2008. This decrease was driven by a decline in the rate of past month cigarette use that was statistically significant (9.8 to 9.1 percent) and a decline in past month cigar use that was not statistically significant (4.2 to 3.8 percent). The rate of past month cigarette use among 12 to 17 year olds declined from 13.0 percent in 2002 to 9.1 percent in 2008. One half million or 2.2 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 used smokeless tobacco in 2008 compared with 2.0 percent in 2002; this slight increase was not statistically significant.
Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rate of current cigarette smoking in 2008 did not differ significantly by gender (9.0 percent for boys vs. 9.2 percent for girls). The rate declined for both boys and girls between 2007 and 2008 (10.0 vs. 9.0 percent for boys and 9.7 vs. 9.2 percent for girls), although the decline for girls was not statistically significant. From 2002 to 2008, the rate of current cigarette smoking among teens decreased for both boys (from 12.3 to 9.0 percent) and girls (from 13.6 to 9.2 percent).
