While individuals over the age of 30 continue to make up the majority of heroin addicts in the United States, the fast growing heroin demographic is among young people age 17-21.

Approximately one in eight teens aged 12 to 17 (11.7 percent) reported in 2005 that they had participated in drug, tobacco, or alcohol prevention programs outside of school in the past year. The prevalence of past month alcohol use was lower among teens who reported participating in these programs, 14.0 percent, than among teens who did not, 16.9 percent. However, for past month use of marijuana, there was no statistically significant difference between those who participated (5.8 percent used marijuana) and those who did not (6.9 percent used marijuana). Similarly, there was no difference between the two groups in current cigarette use (10.4 percent among participants and 10.8 percent among nonparticipants).

When an individual is between treated at a Methadone Maintenance Clinic, they can get along without heroin without getting "dope sick." The irony is that is they would discontinue their Methadone use; they would rapidly descend into a withdrawal that is more painful than if they would have chosen to withdraw from the original opiate addiction.

In 2006, among persons with substance dependence or abuse, the proportion with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs also was associated with age: 57.4 percent of teens aged 12 to 17, 36.9 percent of young adults aged 18 to 25, and 24.1 percent of adults aged 26 or older.
