State estimates for illegal drug dependence for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 1.5 percent in Hawaii to 3.3 percent in the District of Columbia. The highest rates of illegal drug dependence were among persons aged 18 to 25, with the highest rate in Rhode Island.10.0 percent.
Studies show that about 9 percent of marijuana users become addicted, a number that increases among those who start young (to about 17 percent) and among daily users (25-50 percent).
Psychotherapeutics include the nonmedical use of any prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, or sedatives. Over-the-counter substances are not included. In 2006, there were 2.6 million persons aged 12 or older who used psychotherapeutics nonmedically for the first time within the past year.
