Marijuana was the most commonly used illegal drug (14.8 million past month users). In 2006, marijuana was used by 72.8 percent of current illegal drug users and was the only drug used by 52.8 percent of them. Illegal drugs other than marijuana were used by 9.6 million persons or 47.2 percent of illegal drug users aged 12 or older. Current use of other drugs but not marijuana was reported by 27.2 percent of illegal drug users, and 20.0 percent used both marijuana and other drugs.
Physical dependence occurs when the body has adapted to the presence amphetamines, and withdrawal symptoms occur if its use is stopped abruptly.
Liver failure has occurred in people that have taken ten to fifteen grams of acetaminophen, which is one of the active ingredients in Vicodin; taking fifteen to twenty grams can be fatal.
Based on 2004-2005 combined data, among persons who needed but did not receive illegal drug or alcohol use treatment, felt they needed treatment, and made an effort to receive treatment, the four most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) cost or insurance barriers (44.4 percent), (b) other access barriers (21.2 percent), (c) not ready to stop using (21.1 percent), and (d) stigma (18.5 percent).
Among pregnant women aged 15 to 44, an estimated 12.1 percent reported current alcohol use and 3.9 percent reported binge drinking. These rates were significantly lower than the rates for nonpregnant women in the same age group (53.1 and 23.3 percent, respectively).
