Portsmouth, VirginiaIntroduction to Portsmouth, Virginia
Portsmouth is a city in southeastern Virginia situated on the Elizabeth River. The city is located less than three miles from the city of Norfolk. In fact the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, one of the Navy's premiere shipbuilding facilities, is actually located in Portsmouth. Major highways servicing Portsmouth include Interstates I-264 and I-664; as well as U.S. Routes 17 and 58.
Portsmouth's location as an East Coast deep water port has influenced its history throughout its centuries of growth. Founded as a town in 1752 by William Crawford, a wealthy merchant and ship owner, Portsmouth derived its name from the English naval port of the same name. In fact, many of the streets of the new town reflected its English heritage. The town suffered an epidemic of yellow fever in 1855 which killed 1 of every 3 citizens. Three years later it became an independent city, separating from Norfolk County. Portsmouth played a key role in the Civil War. In 1862, the Confederate ironclad warship CSS Virginia, rebuilt using the burned-out hulk of the former USS Merrimack, engaged the Union ironclad USS Monitor in the famous Battle of Hampton Roads. Until 1963 Portsmouth had served as the county seat of Norfolk County but in that year the County consolidated with the City of South Norfolk to form the new City of Chesapeake. Plans are currently being discussed to forge a measure of consolidation between the neighboring cities of Portsmouth and Norfolk.
Things to See and Do in Portsmouth
Portsmouth has lots of attractions, many of which are clustered within easy walking distance of each other. The Cedar Grove Cemetery, established in 1832, is the oldest city-owned cemetery in Portsmouth and is listed on the Virginia and national registers of historic sites. The Childrens Museum of Virginia includes a planetarium, a rock-climbing wall, a giant bubble-making station, and features the Lancaster Antique Toy and Train Collection, one of the most incredible model train collections in the world. The Naval Shipyard Museum contains a vast array of vessels from pleasure craft to carriers as well as an interesting collection of antique cannons. The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum offers visitors the opportunity to feel what it's like to drive a stock car on a professional track or announce the play-by-play of an historic game from a broadcast booth. For performance arts, the city boasts the Commodore Theatre, a luxuriously restored 1945 Art Deco-style motion picture theater with upholstered seating and crystal chandeliers, which shows first-run movies while serving light dinners. One of Portsmouth's annual events is the TodiMusicFest, the American counterpart to the UmbriaMusicFest in Italy. The summer festival features lots of music and high quality entertainment.
Fans of pro sports in Portsmouth can root for a Class Triple-A minor league baseball team headquartered in neighboring Norfolk. The Norfolk Tides, who compete in the International League, serve as the principal farm team for Major League Baseball's Baltimore Orioles. Until 2007, the team had been a longtime affiliate of the New York Mets, an affiliation which lasted from 1969 to 2006. The Tides play their home games at Norfolk's Harbor Park. Also in Norfolk are the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League (AHL). The Admirals, a farm team of the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning, play at the city's Norfolk Scope arena.

Are drugs and alcohol creating destruction in your life in Portsmouth, VA.? Do you know of someone in Portsmouth, VA. that is going down the dark path of drug or alcohol addiction? It is very easy for someone to fall into the trap of addiction, but an individual soon realizes that it is extremely difficult to kick an addiction. That is where an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehab Center in Portsmouth comes in, to assist with the seemingly impossible task of treating individuals who have lost hope at ever being sober and happy again.
An Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Rehab Facility in Portsmouth treats drug addiction and alcoholism by ingraining in an addict that drugs and alcohol are not the solution to their problems and difficulties in life. It teaches an addict that all of their problems have solutions, solutions that can be found through cognitive reasoning and common sense. An Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Treatment Facility in Portsmouth would put the individual in the frame of mind to overcome life's obstacles by confronting them head on, and obliterates the person's desire to use drugs as a way out.
There are many different types of in-patient and out-patient treatment programs available in Portsmouth, VA., because each individual has different needs. Examples of programs available in Portsmouth are Outpatient Drug Rehabilitation Programs, Short-term Drug Rehabilitation Programs, Inpatient Drug Rehabilitation, Long-term Rehab Centers, support group meetings, drug counseling, halfway houses and sober living.
Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Centers in Portsmouth have a two-prong approach to treatment, both the physical and psychological causes and effects of drug and alcohol addiction. As the individual's brain adapts to the use of a psychoactive substance over time, the effect that the drug creates within the body is lessened. Due to this physical tolerance, more and more drugs or alcohol must be consumed to get high or even get a buzz.
The physical aspect of addiction is the first thing an addict will address when making the decision to seek treatment for addiction. A detoxification program in Portsmouth, Virginia delivered by a qualified Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Facility will navigate the addict through the uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that are caused by abruptly coming off of drugs or alcohol. These withdrawal symptoms can last for days, weeks or months; all depending on the drug of choice and individual circumstances. Heroin withdrawal for example will take a considerable amount of time to detox and is a highly painful and uncomfortable process. Detoxification and psychological counseling right from get-go will put the individual on the right path to address issues involved with drug and alcohol abuse. This gives the individual a better chance of having a lasting recovery and prevents relapse.
A Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehab Facility in Portsmouth, VA. takes the individual out of the environment which may have triggered their addiction, and offers an environment that will ensure a successful recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. The individual will be given tools to better handle life situations and triggers which may have caused their drug use. When the individual completes treatment and does return home, he will do so with a new ability to handle triggers, which will no longer have an influence over him, his actions and behavior.
People who have abused drugs and alcohol shows changes in their brain. Research shows that these changes in the brain effect how an addict responds to situations. Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Facilities are aware of this and know that an addict will need more than high hopes to beat addiction. This is yet another reason why professional treatment at a Drug Rehabilitation or Alcohol Rehab Program in Portsmouth, VA. is so important.
There are a lot of reasons to seek treatment today, mainly because most people who try to kick the habit on their own will fail and just start using drugs or alcohol again. Tackling addiction and getting control of your life can be achieved by seeking treatment at a Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehab Center in Portsmouth, VA. It doesn't have to be another failure, sobriety can be achieved with the right technology and the care and support of people who want to see you winning again. Don't think about it, do something about it and get your life or the life of someone you care about on the road to a sober and happy life today.
