Over time heroin users develop a tolerance for the drug. Heroin users find themselves needing increasingly larger doses of the drug to achieve the same intensity or effect they experienced when they first began using heroin.
According to the most recent studies that were conducted by the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), fourteen of the top twenty most abused controlled substances in the United States, are reported to be prescription drugs. Benzodiazepines, such as Xanax rank highest on the list, and are closely followed by the opiates or painkillers.
Of the 20.8 million people in 2007 who were classified as needing substance use treatment but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility in the past year, 1.3 million persons (6.4 percent) reported that they felt they needed treatment for their illegal drug or alcohol use problem. Of these 1.3 million persons who felt they needed treatment, 380,000 (28.5 percent) reported that they made an effort to get treatment, and 955,000 (71.5 percent) reported making no effort to get treatment.
Residential substance abuse treatment offers a safe, drug free environment where individuals can confront their addiction and associated issues, with the help of the qualified staff at a drug rehab center. Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005, the rate of current illegal drug use was highest among American Indians or Alaska Natives, about twice the overall rate among teens (19.2 vs. 9.9 percent, respectively). This pattern was similar for specific types of illegal drug use, including marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutics.
