Most teens aged 12 to 17 believed their parents would "strongly disapprove" of their using substances. In 2008, 90.8 percent of teens reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their trying marijuana or hashish once or twice; this was similar to the 91.0 percent reported in 2007, but was higher than the 89.1 percent reported in 2002. Most (89.7 percent) reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day, which was similar to the rates in 2007 (89.6 percent) and 2002 (89.0 percent). In 2008, 92.4 percent of teens reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day, which was similar to the 92.1 percent reported in 2007, but was higher than the 89.5 percent reported in 2002.
Teens aged 12 to 17 who received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year were more likely to use alcohol in the past year than those who did not receive treatment or counseling (39.7 vs. 31.5 percent). Teens receiving mental health treatment or counseling in the past year also were more likely to have smoked cigarettes in the past year (25.8 vs. 14.9 percent).
Of those aged 12 or older who had not smoked cigarettes prior to the past year, the past year initiation rate for cigarettes was 2.7 percent in 2008, similar to the rate in 2007 (2.5 percent). Among teens aged 12 to 17 years who had not smoked cigarettes prior to the past year, the incidence rate showed no significant difference between 2007 (5.9 percent) and 2008 (6.2 percent). Among boys aged 12 to 17 who had never smoked prior to the past year, the decrease in the past year initiation rate from 6.1 percent in 2002 to 5.7 percent in 2008 was not statistically significant. Similarly for girls, the decrease from 7.4 percent in 2002 to 6.7 percent in 2008 was not statistically significant.
Among the estimated 4.0 million adults on probation at some time in the past year, 24.4 percent reported current illegal drug use in 2001, which was comparable with the rate observed in 2000 (24.2 percent). This compares with a rate of 6.3 percent among adults not on probation in 2001.
Although adults aged 26 or older were less likely to be current drug users than teens aged 12 to 17 or young adults aged 18 to 25 (6.1 vs. 9.8 and 19.8 percent, respectively), there were more drug users aged 26 or older (11.4 million) than in the 12 to 17 year age group (2.5 million) and 18 to 25 year age group (6.5 million) combined.
Young adults aged 18 to 22 enrolled full time in college were more likely than their peers not enrolled full time (this category includes part-time college students and persons not enrolled in college) to use alcohol, binge drink, and drink heavily in 2004. Binge and heavy use rates for college students were 43.4 and 18.6 percent, respectively, compared with 39.4 and 13.5 percent, respectively, for other persons aged 18 to 22.
