Opiates deliver powerful effects to their users by activating opiate receptors that are widely distributed throughout the brain and body. Once an opiate reaches the brain, it quickly activates the opiate receptors that are found in many brain regions.

The average age at first smokeless tobacco use among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 in 2005 was 18.3 years. Averages were 18.2 years for boys and 18.9 years for girls.

Patterns of alcohol use across county type were different for teens and adults in 2001. Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rates of past month alcohol use and heavy alcohol use were higher in rural areas than in large metropolitan areas (for past month use, the difference was marginally significant, p < .07).
