Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rate of binge alcohol was associated with county type. The rates of binge alcohol use were 11.5 percent in nonmetropolitan areas, 10.2 percent in small metropolitan areas, and 9.3 percent in large metropolitan areas. In completely rural counties of nonmetropolitan areas, 11.9 percent of teens reported binge drinking.
Most (88.9 percent) of the 4.3 million recent alcohol initiates were younger than 21 at the time of initiation.
