Did You Know? ...
Interesting Facts and Statistics:

During World War II chocolates dosed with methamphetamine were known as Fliegerschokolade ("flyer's chocolate") when given to pilots, or Panzerschokolade ("tanker's chocolate") when given to tank crews.

In 2004, 4.4 million persons had used alcohol for the first time within the past 12 months. The number of alcohol initiates increased from 3.9 million in 2002 and 4.1 million in 2003. Most (86.9 percent) of the 4.4 million recent alcohol initiates in 2004 were younger than age 21 at the time of initiation.

Among adults aged 26 or older, 5.9 percent were current illegal drug users in 2008. In this age group, 4.2 percent used marijuana, and 1.9 percent used prescription-type drugs nonmedically. Less than 1 percent used cocaine (0.7 percent), hallucinogens (0.1 percent), heroin (0.1 percent), and inhalants (0.1 percent). The only significant change between 2007 and 2008 in the rates of past month use among adults in this age group involved crack, which decreased from 0.3 to 0.2 percent. In addition, the rates of past year nonmedical use declined for psychotherapeutic drugs overall (from 4.9 percent in 2007 to 4.4 percent in 2008), sedatives (from 0.3 to 0.2 percent), and methamphetamine (from 0.4 to 0.3 percent). However, increases occurred in lifetime use of hallucinogens (from 14.2 percent in 2007 to 15.2 percent in 2008) and lifetime nonmedical use of pain relievers (from 11.8 to 12.7 percent).

Past month heavy alcohol use also was associated with MDE in the past year in 2006. Among adults aged 18 or older with MDE in the past year, 8.6 percent were heavy alcohol users, higher than the 7.3 percent of adults without MDE in the past year. Similarly, among adults with MDE, the rate of daily cigarette use in the past month was 29.7 percent, while the rate was 16.0 percent among adults without MDE.

The top fifth for average annual incidence of marijuana for persons aged 12 or older was comprised mostly of States from the West (five) and from the Northeast (four). Seven States ranked in the top fifth for marijuana incidence in the 12 or older age group also ranked in the top fifth for past month marijuana use (Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont). Because most initiation of marijuana takes place at age 25 or earlier (Gfroerer, Wu, & Penne, 2002), the rates of initiation in the 26 or older age group were much lower than those in the 12 to 17 and 18 to 25 age groups: 0.1, 6.6, and 6.8, respectively. Vermont had the highest rate among teens aged 12 to 17 (10.4), while New Hampshire had the highest rate among persons aged 18 to 25 (11.1) (Table B.5). In the 12 or older age group, seven States from the South were ranked in the lowest fifth for incidence of marijuana.

Among racial/ethnic groups, the rates of treatment for adults aged 18 or older in 2006 were 21.6 percent for persons reporting two or more races, 15.2 percent for whites, 11.9 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives, 7.4 percent for blacks, 7.0 percent for Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, 7.0 percent for Hispanics, and 5.6 percent for Asians.
