Research shows that the memory impairment from Ecstasy use is not proportional to the number of tablets consumed and may occur with relatively low usage.
Current illegal drug use rates remained stable from 2005 to 2006 among teens aged 12 to 17. However, rates of current use declined significantly from 2002 to 2006 for any illegal drug and several specific drugs (including marijuana, hallucinogens, LSD, Ecstasy, prescription type drugs used nonmedically, pain relievers, tranquilizers, and the use of illegal drugs other than marijuana). For any illegal drug use, the rates were 11.6 percent in 2002, 11.2 percent in 2003, 10.6 percent in 2004, 9.9 percent in 2005, and 9.8 percent in 2006.
Methamphetamine increases the release of dopamine, which leads to high levels of the chemical flooding the brain; this mechanism is a typical action for most drugs of abuse.
Among pregnant women aged 15 to 44 years, 5.1 percent used illegal drugs in the past month based on data averaged for 2007 and 2008. This rate was significantly lower than the rate among women in this age group who were not pregnant (9.8 percent). Among adults aged 26 or older in 2005, 3.0 percent used smokeless tobacco in the past month.
