In 2006, adults aged 18 or older who were on parole or a supervised release from jail during the past year had higher rates of dependence on or abuse of a substance (36.9 percent) than their counterparts who were not on parole or supervised release during the past year (9.1 percent).
The rate of current illegal drug use among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005 was similar to the rate in 2004, but significantly lower than in 2002. The rates were 11.6 percent in 2002, 11.2 percent in 2003, 10.6 percent in 2004, and 9.9 percent in 2005.
About half (49.1 percent) of daily smokers aged 12 or older reported smoking 16 or more cigarettes per day; this is approximately one pack or more.
