Among adults aged 50 to 59, the rate of current illegal drug use increased between 2002 and 2005 . For those aged 50 to 54, the rate increased from 3.4 to 5.2 percent, but this increase was not statistically significant. Among those aged 55 to 59, the rate increased significantly from 1.9 to 3.4 percent. This may reflect the aging into these age groups of the baby boom cohort, which has a relatively higher rate of lifetime illegal drug use than older cohorts have.
Animal studies that were designed to simulate human patterns in regard to inhalant abuse have suggested that "huffing" has been shown to cause low birth weights, skeletal abnormalities in newborns and delayed neurological development.
Serious mental illness (SMI) among adults is defined in Public Law 102-321 as persons aged 18 or older who currently or at any time in the past year have had a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder (excluding developmental and substance use disorders) of sufficient duration to meet diagnostic criteria specified within DSM-IV that has resulted in functional impairment, which substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities. In 2008, there were an estimated 9.8 million adults with SMI, representing 4.4 percent of adults.
Among adults aged 18 or older who had MDE in the past year, 65.6 percent received treatment (i.e., saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional or used prescription medication) for depression in the same time period.
Current cigarette smoking among persons aged 12 or older was lowest in the West (21.0 percent) and highest in the Midwest (28.1 percent). Vermont had the highest rate among teens aged 12 to 17 (10.4), while New Hampshire had the highest rate among persons aged 18 to 25 (11.1) (Table B.5). In the 12 or older age group, seven States from the South were ranked in the lowest fifth for incidence of marijuana.
