Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
The past year prevalence of MDE was higher among adult girls than among adult boys (8.1 vs. 4.6 percent). Among women, past year MDE rates were higher in the younger age groups (12.1 percent for 18 to 25 year olds, 8.8 percent for 26 to 49 year olds) compared with those 50 or older (6.0 percent).
In 2006, the number of persons who had started smoking cigarettes daily within the past 12 months was 1.1 million. This estimate is similar to the estimates for 2002 (1.0 million), 2003 (1.1 million), 2004 (1.1 million), and 2005 (1.0 million). Of these new daily smokers in 2006, 44.2 percent, or 0.5 million (an average of about 1,300 initiates per day), were younger than age 18 when they started smoking daily.
Among teens aged 12 to 17, an estimated 17.3 percent used alcohol in the month prior to the survey interview. This rate was higher than the rate of youth alcohol use reported in 2000 (16.4 percent). Of all teens, 10.6 percent were binge drinkers, and 2.5 percent were heavy drinkers. These are roughly the same percentages as those reported in 2000 (10.4 and 2.6 percent, respectively).
Injecting Meth is a popular method for use, also known as slamming, but carries quite serious risks. The hydrochloride salt of methamphetamine is soluble in water; injection users may use any dose from 125 milligrams to over one gram using a hypodermic needle (Although it should be noted that typically street methamphetamine is "cut" with a water-soluble cutting material which constitutes a significant portion of that street meth dose).
Inhalant use is a serious danger that a large percentage of the community has not even heard much about; this fact is quickly changing due to media-related coverage about teen deaths that are related to the practice of "huffing".
Heroin overdoses, which can result whether the drug is snorted, smoked, or injected, can cause slow and shallow breathing, convulsions, coma, and even death.
