The majority of doctors in this country do not realize that methadone is more addictive than other forms of opiates and that ending methadone treatment is much more difficult due to the severity of the related withdrawal symptoms.

Rates of SPD in 2005 were highest for adults aged 18 to 25 (18.6 percent) and lowest for adults aged 50 or older (7.1 percent).

Rates of past month illegal drug use varied with age. Through the adolescent years from 12 to 17, the rates of current illegal drug use in 2008 increased from 3.3 percent at ages 12 or 13 to 8.6 percent at ages 14 or 15 to 15.2 percent at ages 16 or 17. The highest rate was among persons aged 18 to 20 (21.5 percent). The rate was 18.4 percent among those aged 21 to 25, and it was 13.0 percent among those aged 26 to 29. Among persons aged 65 or older, the rate was 1.0 percent.

In 2005, there were 1.5 million teens (5.8 percent) aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment for an alcohol use problem. Of this group, only 119,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (0.5 percent of all teens and 8.1 percent of teens who needed treatment), leaving 1.3 million teens who needed but did not receive treatment.

Initiation of Ecstasy (i.e., MDMA) use has been rising steadily since 1992. The increase from 1.3 million new users in 1999 to 1.9 million in 2000 was statistically significant, as were the age-specific increases among 12 to 17 year olds and 18 to 25 year olds. The increase from 1998 to 1999 also was statistically significant, from 0.7 million to 1.3 million new users, as were the age-specific increases.

There were 13.4 million persons classified with dependence on or abuse of alcohol (5.9 percent of the total population). Among past year users of alcohol, 9.3 percent were classified with alcohol dependence or abuse.
