Among teens aged 12 to 17, there were 1.3 million (4.9 percent) who needed treatment for an illegal drug use problem in 2005. Of this group, only 142,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (11.3 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment), leaving 1.1 million teens who needed treatment but did not receive it at a specialty facility.

In 2006, 14.5 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 who received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year were dependent on or abused illegal drugs or alcohol in the past year, higher than the 6.3 percent who did not receive treatment or counseling.

Decreases in the rate of current use of a substance often occur when there are increases in the level of perceived risk of using that substance. Looking over the 7-year period, the proportion of teens aged 12 to 17 who reported perceiving great risk from smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day increased from 63.1 percent in 2002 to 69.7 percent in 2008. During the same period, the rate of past month cigarette smoking among teens aged 12 to 17 dropped from 13.0 to 9.1 percent.

The rate of past month alcohol use increased with increasing levels of education. Among adults aged 18 or older with less than a high school education, 33.4 percent were current drinkers in 2001, while 65.2 percent of college graduates were current drinkers. However, binge drinking and heavy drinking were least prevalent among college graduates.

In the college-aged population (persons aged 18 to 22 years old), the rate of current use of illegal drugs was lower among full-time college students (19.2 percent) than among other persons aged 18 to 22 years, which includes part-time college students, students in other grades, and nonstudents (22.6 percent). Current illegal drug use among college students and other 18 to 22 year olds did not change between 2005 and 2006.
