Nationally, 7.7 percent of the population aged 12 or older was classified with dependence on or abuse of alcohol in the past year. Persons aged 18 to 25 had the highest rate of alcohol dependence or abuse (17.7 percent).

As of 1999 thirteen states had treatment admission rates for amphetamine abuse of at least 55 per 100,000, and eight of these had rates of 100 per 100,000 or more.

In 2008, an estimated 22.2 million persons (8.9 percent of the population aged 12 or older) were classified with substance dependence or abuse in the past year based on criteria specified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM IV).
