Did You Know? ...
Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Many drugs such as marijuana and heroin, work by activating neurons because their chemical structure mimics that of a natural brain neurotransmitter. This similarity in structure "fools" receptors in the brain and allows the drugs to lock onto and activate the various nerve cells. Although drugs mimic these brain chemicals, they don't activate these nerve cells in the same way as a natural neurotransmitter, and continuous use of these chemicals can lead to abnormal messages being transmitted throughout the network of the brain.

There were 3.9 million persons aged 12 or older (1.6 percent of the population) who received some kind of treatment for a problem related to the use of alcohol or illegal drugs in 2005. More than half (2.1 million) received treatment at a self-help group. There were 1.5 million persons who received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an outpatient, 1.1 million at a rehabilitation facility as an inpatient, 1.0 million at a mental health center as an outpatient, 773,000 at a hospital as an inpatient, 460,000 at a private doctor's office, 399,000 at an emergency room, and 344,000 at a prison or jail. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2004 and 2005.

More than 3.3 million 12 to 17 year-olds were past-year marijuana users as of 2009.

The initiation rate (i.e., the percentage of nonsmokers who initiated cigarette use within the past 12 months) was 2.6 percent in 2002, 2003, and 2004, and it was 2.7 percent in 2005. Among teens aged 12 to 17 years, the incidence showed no significant changes during this period in that it was 6.7 percent in 2002, 6.6 percent in 2003, 6.8 percent in 2004, and 6.6 percent in 2005. This pattern was observed for both male and female teens.

Lortab addiction symptoms manifest with long-term use of Lortab. In some cases, long-term use of Lortab may be legitimate and non-abusive.

In the 17th century, many people in Europe were treated for a variety of health problems with opium. In 1729, opium smoking was made illegal in China and soon the importation of opium was banned. This ban upset the British who were in charge of trading this valuable product. Opium was still smuggled into China and this caused the "Opium Wars" (1839-1842 and 1856-1860) between the British and the Chinese.
