The Drug Abuse Warning Network reports that cocaine-related emergency room visits, after increasing 78 percent between 1990 and 1994, remained level between 1994 and 1996, with 152,433 cocaine-related episodes reported in 1996.

Most adults aged 18 or older with substance dependence or abuse in 2005 were employed either full or part time. Of the 20.2 million adults classified with dependence or abuse, 15.5 million (76.7 percent) were employed.

The rate of past month tobacco use among teens aged 12 to 17 decreased from 12.4 percent in 2007 to 11.4 percent in 2008. This decrease was driven by a decline in the rate of past month cigarette use that was statistically significant (9.8 to 9.1 percent) and a decline in past month cigar use that was not statistically significant (4.2 to 3.8 percent). The rate of past month cigarette use among 12 to 17 year olds declined from 13.0 percent in 2002 to 9.1 percent in 2008. One-half million or 2.2 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 used smokeless tobacco in 2008 compared with 2.0 percent in 2002; this slight increase was not statistically significant.

The past year prevalence of MDE was highest for adults aged 18 to 25 (9.7 percent) and lowest for those aged 50 or older (5.1 percent).

Among people who needed but did not receive illegal drug use treatment and felt they needed treatment (based on 2004 2005 combined data), the six most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) cost or insurance barriers (36.7 percent), (b) not ready to stop using (34.7 percent), (c) stigma (24.4 percent), (d) did not feel the need for treatment at the time or could handle the problem without treatment (16.3 percent), (e) did not know where to go for treatment (16.3 percent), and (f) other access barriers (16.1 percent).

Substance abuse can affect individuals from all different walks of life and anyone can succumb to a drug or alcohol addiction. It does not make a difference how rich or how poor the individual is or even if they have a wonderful family life.
