Among adults aged 18 or older who had MDE in the past year, 69.1 percent received treatment (i.e., saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional or used prescription medication) for depression in the same time period. The percentage of the population with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs increased from 2000 to 2001 (1.9 to 2.5 percent).
