Vancouver, WashingtonIntroduction to Vancouver, Washington
The city of Vancouver, county seat of Clark County, is located in the southwest corner of the state of Washington, just north of the Oregon border. The city lies on the north bank of the Columbia River, and is surrounded by Mount St. Helens to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Cascade Mountains to the east. Major thoroughfares servicing the city include Interstates I-5, I-205, and I-84; as well as Washington State Highways 14 and 500. Vancouver is situated only 10 miles north of Portland, Oregon.
Originally called Fort Vancouver, the community served as the center of all fur trading in the Pacific Northwest during the first half of the 19th century. Incorporated in 1857, the new city renamed Vancouver enjoyed a period of steady development lasting throughout the rest of the century. During the First World War, the site later named Pearson Field became the worlds largest spruce lumber mill for construction of airplanes used in the war effort. During World War II, Vancouvers Kaiser Shipyard served as a major shipbuilding center for a variety of craft used by the U.S. Navy. Since that time, the Vancouver industrial base has shifted to high tech and service industry jobs, which dominate the city's economy today.

Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Those lower on the totem pole, such as heroin dealers will find that their financial gains do not compare to those in the upper levels of heroin trafficking. This is attributed to the fact that they are more often than not addicts themselves and are frequently in and out of jail. Also, U.S. laws and law enforcement have stepped up their efforts on interrupting the flow of heroin into the United States. They have also increased their efforts in arresting heroin distributors and heroin dependent individuals who commit crimes to maintain their addiction.
Chronic heroin users who inject the drug are at risk of developing scarred or collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, abscesses, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and liver and kidney disease.
In 2008, there were 1.2 million teens (5.0 percent) aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment for an alcohol use problem. Of this group, only 77,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (0.3 percent of all teens and 6.2 percent of teens who needed treatment), leaving almost 1.2 million teens who needed but did not receive treatment.
Among pregnant women aged 15 to 44 years, 5.1 percent used illegal drugs in the past month based on data averaged for 2007 and 2008. This rate was significantly lower than the rate among women in this age group who were not pregnant (9.8 percent). Among pregnant women, the average rate of current illegal drug use in 2007 2008 (5.1 percent) did not change significantly from 2005 2006 (4.0 percent) and was similar to the rate observed in 2003 2004 (4.6 percent).
