Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Use of illegal drugs and alcohol was more common among current cigarette smokers than among nonsmokers in 2006, as in 2002 through 2005. Among persons aged 12 or older, 20.4 percent of past month cigarette smokers reported current use of an illegal drug compared with 4.2 percent of persons who were not current cigarette smokers. Past month alcohol use was reported by 66.3 percent of current cigarette smokers compared with 45.8 percent of those who did not use cigarettes in the past month. The association also was found with binge drinking (43.6 percent of current cigarette users vs. 16.1 percent of current nonusers) and heavy drinking (16.0 vs. 3.8 percent, respectively).
During the 1990s, heroin incidence rates rose to a level not reached since the 1970s. The annual number of new users ranged from 55,000 to 69,000 between 1989 and 1992. However, there were 110,000 new heroin users in 1994 and 146,000 in 2000. Between 1975 and 1977, there were approximately 120,000 to 140,000 new users of heroin per year.
It is encouraging to note that many teenagers recognize the risks of heroin. The NSDUH found that 87.8 percent of 12th graders agree that heroin substance abuse represents a "great risk." The fact that so many teenagers recognize the dangers of heroin use is encouraging, and could lead to further declines in teen drug use of heroin.
In 2006, rates of current alcohol use were 3.9 percent among persons aged 12 or 13, 15.6 percent of persons aged 14 or 15, 29.7 percent of 16 or 17 year olds, 51.6 percent of those aged 18 to 20, and 68.6 percent of 21 to 25 year olds (Figure 3.1). Among older age groups, the prevalence of alcohol use decreased with increasing age, from 63.5 percent among 26 to 29 year olds to 48.0 percent among 60 to 64 year olds and 38.4 percent among people aged 65 or older.
Drug rehab treatment needs to be made readily available. Because individuals who are addicted to drugs may be uncertain about entering a treatment program, taking advantage of opportunities when they are willing to accept help is crucial. Potential treatment applicants can be lost if treatment is not immediately available.
Seizures of oxycodone products, including OxyContin, submitted to state and local laboratories increased 124% from 14,990 items/exhibits in 2004 to 33,612 items/exhibits in 2008.
