In 2008, probation status was associated with substance dependence or abuse. The rate of substance dependence or abuse was 34.0 percent among adults who were on probation during the past year, which was significantly higher than the rate among adults who were not on probation during the past year (8.4 percent).

Among the 3.1 million persons who received treatment for alcohol or drugs in the past year, nearly 2.0 million received treatment for alcohol during their most recent treatment. An estimated 852,000 persons received treatment for marijuana, and 554,000 persons received treatment for cocaine. (Note that the estimates of treatment by substance include persons reporting for more than one substance.)

Long term methamphetamine abuse can often lead to homelessness, divorce, loss of a job or standing or good standing in the community, criminal behavior, and loss of control of over one's own thought processes.

Drinking levels also were associated with tobacco use. Among heavy alcohol users, 61.1 percent smoked cigarettes in the past month, while only 20.6 percent of non-binge current drinkers and 17.8 percent of nondrinkers were current smokers.
