The effects of methadone last longer than any of the other morphine-based drugs. Methadone's effects can last up to 24 hours, thereby permitting administration of the drug only once a day in maintenance programs.
Short term recreational use of amphetamine can slip unnoticed into long term systematic abuse. Some speed addicts have had habits lasting over twenty years.
In 2006, among persons with substance dependence or abuse, the proportion with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs also was associated with age: 57.4 percent of teens aged 12 to 17, 36.9 percent of young adults aged 18 to 25, and 24.1 percent of adults aged 26 or older.
Among teens aged 12 to 17, there were 1.3 million (4.9 percent) who needed treatment for an illegal drug use problem in 2005.
