The number and the percentage of the population receiving substance use treatment within the past year remained stable between 2005 and 2006 (3.9 million, 1.6 percent in 2005; 4.0 million, 1.6 percent in 2006).
Prior to 1970, the majority of marijuana initiates each year were young adults aged 18 to 25 years. Since 1972, the number of new users among teens aged 12 to 17 years has been uniformly greater than among young adults.
