Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Introduction to Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is one of the 25 largest cities in the United States with a population of nearly 600,000 people. It is also the largest city in Wisconsin as well as an international seaport. Milwaukee is located in southeast Wisconsin, on the western bank of Lake Michigan, and an hour and thirty minutes west of the state capital, Madison. The Milwaukee metropolitan area has a population of approximately 1.7 million people.

Milwaukee is home to ten Fortune 1000 company headquarters, including such household names as Johnson Controls, Northwestern Mutual, and Harley-Davidson.

Milwaukee is ranked as the 14th "Most Fun U.S. City" in a survey conducted in 2003 by Cranium Inc. Factors taken into account in the ranking include: the number of sports teams, restaurants, dance performances, toy stores, the amount of a city's budget that is spent on recreation, and other factors.

Milwaukee experiences all four seasons and rapidly changing weather. July is the warmest month of the year with an average temperature of 76 degrees Fahrenheit. January is the coldest month, with average temperatures remaining below freezing at 26 degrees Fahrenheit. The "lake effect" of Lake Michigan makes for cooler summers, warmer winters (than surrounding areas further from the lake), and plenty of snow.

Milwaukee History

The Milwaukee area was originally inhabited by several native American tribes. The first white settler to the area was a French Canadian fur trader who established a trading post in 1795. What was to become Milwaukee was originally three towns founded by three different men in 1833 and 1834. In 1846 the towns were combined and incorporated as the City of Milwaukee.

The name Milwaukee is derived from the Indian word Millioke, which, depending on interpretation, means "the good land", or "gathering place by the water", or "beautiful or pleasant lands".

If you or a loved one living in Milwaukee has a drug or alcohol addiction problem, you may be overwhelmed and not know where to turn; but our mission is to support you and to let you know that you do not have to face this situation alone. We care about you and your loved ones in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; the good news is that you have identified that there is a drug or alcohol abuse problem, and are now looking for a positive solution. We will help you to assess the seriousness of your drug or alcohol abuse problem and to locate the Milwaukee Drug Rehabilitation or Alcohol Treatment Program that will best be suited to your individual needs.

The different types of drug treatment in Milwaukee, WI. can include holistic drug and alcohol rehabilitation, Short-term Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities, Long-term Addiction Recovery Programs, Outpatient Addiction Recovery, Inpatient Addiction Recovery Facilities, partial hospitalization, and sober living just to name a few. The type of Drug Rehab or Alcohol Treatment Facility that is needed will depend upon the degree of dependence, the individual's social situation, and the kind of substance which they have become addicted to.

The ultimate goal of all Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Centers should be to enable the individual from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to achieve lasting abstinence. Much research has indicated that in order for drug and alcohol addiction treatment to be effective, it must teach the individual how to change to their compulsive behaviors in order to remove the addiction and to be able to avoid a possible relapse. Overall, Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Facilities need to address both the physical and psychological dependency of an addiction; the behavioral and social symptoms also need to be adequately addressed before an individual from Milwaukee can have the tools that they will need to help sustain that recovery for the remainder of his or her life.

Drug detox is the first step in the Milwaukee, WI. rehabilitation treatment process toward recovery from a drug and alcohol addiction. The main goal in this component of the Milwaukee Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Program is to rid the body of toxins that accumulate over the course of a long term drug or alcohol addiction. It is very common to see individuals from Milwaukee, WI. in drug detox that has combined different drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or pain pills with alcohol.

When an individual from Milwaukee has sustained the use of any of these various kinds of drugs, it causes adaptations within their body that lessen the drug's original effects over time; this is a phenomenon that is known as drug tolerance. At this point, the individual from Milwaukee, Wisconsin has developed a physical dependency on the substance and withdrawal symptoms will be experienced upon discontinuation. The reason that it is imperative that an individual from Milwaukee have professional supervision during the detox process is because the staff at an Alcohol Rehab or Drug Treatment Program can help to make this process much easier by administering elements of treatment that can help to alleviate some of the painful withdrawal symptoms.

Once the early stages of withdrawal have passed, an individual from Milwaukee will then be able to begin a directed, Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehab Center that will begin to address aspects of the psychological dependency by teaching behavioral skills that will help them to function without the use of alcohol or drugs. This component in drug recovery treatment will usually involve some type of individual or group counseling. There may also be occupational and behavioral therapies that are utilized as components of treatment in order to help to teach the individual from Milwaukee, WI. life and social skills that may have been lost while they were under the influence of addiction.

Before an addict is finally willing to surrender to the Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehab Center process, they may have already made repeated promises to their loved ones in Milwaukee who have been experiencing the negative effects from the individual's drug or alcohol abuse; because of the way that these substances chemically alter the person's brain, these empty promises cannot be fulfilled. If loved ones in Milwaukee, Wisconsin continue to believe these empty promises, it could possible mean that the addicted person will then have time to overdose on drugs or have a serious car accident while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

In a Drug Rehabilitation or Alcohol Rehab Center, the individual from Milwaukee will become educated about the ways that drugs and alcohol affect the various functions of the brain; they will learn that it was these physiological changes that made it almost impossible for them to stop using on their own, and not personal integrity. As an individual from Milwaukee, WI. learns more about how to deal with drug triggers and as they master to the tools that they will need to use in order to stay sober when they return home to Milwaukee, they will become confident in their ability to do so.
