Both new and experienced users risk overdosing on heroin because it is impossible for them to know the purity of the heroin they are using. (Heroin sold on the street often is mixed with other substances such as sugar, starch, or quinine. An added risk results when heroin is mixed with poisons such as strychnine.) Heroin overdoses--which can result whether the drug is snorted, smoked, or injected--can cause slow and shallow breathing, convulsions, coma, and even death. Heroin overdose takes the lives of many users each year. It is not a surprise that those who abuse heroin are at an increased risk of death. Their excess mortality rate ranges between six to twenty times their peers who are of the same age and gender and have not abused heroin. The causes of this excess mortality are manifold, including HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and violence. Despite the HIV pandemic among injecting drug users, deaths attributed to overdose remain a major cause of mortality for heroin users, and in many countries is the leading cause of death. Typically, males are the most predominant casualties of a heroin overdose. With around 80% of heroin overdose deaths reported being male. From 1999 to 2000, the use of MDMA increased among all three grade levels measured in this study - 8th, 10th, and 12th. For 10th and 12th graders, this is the second consecutive year MDMA use has increased. Past year use of MDMA increased among 8th graders from 1.7 percent in 1999 to 3.1 percent in 2000; from 4.4 percent to 5.4 percent among 10th graders; and from 5.6 percent to 8.2 percent among 12th graders. Also among 12th graders, the perceived availability of MDMA rose from 40.1 percent in 1999 to 51.4 percent in 2000. Slang words for MDMA are ecstasy, E, XTC, X, Adam, hug, beans, clarity, lover's speed, and love drug. |
