In 2005, nearly 6.2% of high school seniors reported using methamphetamine at least once. Many people use marijuana compulsively even though it interferes with family, school, work, and recreational activities. What makes this all the more disturbing is that marijuana use has been shown to be three times more likely to lead to dependence among adolescents than among adults. Three quarters of all heroin brought into the United States comes from South America and Mexico (with South America making up the majority of this amount) There is a wealth of information regarding heroin facts and the short term effects of the drug. Soon after injection (or inhalation), heroin crosses the blood-brain barrier. In the brain, heroin is converted to morphine and binds rapidly to opioid receptors. Abusers typically report feeling a surge of pleasurable sensation - a "rush." The intensity of the rush is a function of how much drug is taken and how rapidly the drug enters the brain and binds to the natural opioid receptors. |
