338,000 people used heroin last month. Major withdrawal symptoms peak between 48 and 72 hours after the last dose and typically subside after about a week; however, some individuals may show persistent withdrawal symptoms for months. Although heroin withdrawal is considered less dangerous than alcohol or barbiturate withdrawal, sudden withdrawal by heavily dependent users who are in poor health is occasionally fatal. Meth users may exhibit sexually compulsive behaviour while under the influence of Methamphetamine. This disregard for the potential dangers of unprotected sex or other reckless sexual behavior may contribute to the spread of sexually transmitted infections. In the US, opium was used to treat soldiers during the Civil War (1861-1865). During the late 1800s, doctors prescribed "tonics" containing opiates for many conditions. Rarely did these medicines list opiates as one of the ingredients. In fact, heroin was marketed as a cough medicine and a cure for morphine addiction. However, many physicians had concerns about possible addiction to these medicines. |
