Among full-time college students aged 19, current cigarette smoking increased from 24.4 percent in 2005 to 28.8 percent in 2006; however, it decreased for students aged 20 (from 32.3 to 27.2 percent) and 21 (from 36.3 to 30.2 percent). Past month cigarette smoking also declined from 32.9 to 23.5 percent among Hispanic full-time students aged 18 to 22. Use of any tobacco product and of the individual products remained stable for persons aged 18 to 22 who were not enrolled as full-time college students.

In addition to being marketed as "bath salts", some of these new designer drugs are also being sold as bath crystals, plant food and herbal incense.

The government has implemented strict guidelines regarding drug testing. These guidelines were developed by The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). These government agencies mandate that companies that use commercial class driver?s licenses for their employees must have a specific drug testing system in place. These requirements mandate that each drug test will be conducted for the detection of five specific groups of drugs, which are marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and PCP.

Methamphetamine is frequently combined with heroin; using the drugs together is often referred to as "speedballing"; this method is extremely dangerous and has been linked to many deaths in the United States.

There was a decrease in the rate of illegal drug dependence or abuse among boys aged 12 or older from 3.9 percent in 2004 to 3.5 percent in 2005. The rate for girls did not change between 2004 and 2005 (2.2 vs. 2.1 percent).
