The specific drug categories with the largest number of recent initiates among persons aged 12 or older were nonmedical use of pain relievers (2.2 million) and marijuana use (2.1 million), followed by nonmedical use of tranquilizers (1.3 million), then by use of inhalants (0.9 million) and cocaine (0.9 million).

Many times there is an underlying fear, that the individual will feel that they are being attacked. The thing to keep in mind before, during, and after an intervention is that you are doing this for one reason, and that is to save your loved ones life.

In 2008, the rate of current illegal drug use among persons aged 12 or older was higher in metropolitan areas than in nonmetropolitan areas. The rates were 8.5 percent in large metropolitan counties, 8.1 percent in small metropolitan counties, and 6.3 percent in nonmetropolitan counties as a group. Within nonmetropolitan areas, the rate was 7.2 percent in urbanized counties, 5.6 percent in less urbanized counties, and 6.1 percent in completely rural counties.
