Research suggests that people who used ecstasy at least 25 times had lowered serotonin levels for as long as a year after quitting.

Initiation of Ecstasy (i.e., MDMA) use has been rising steadily since 1992. The increase from 1.3 million new users in 1999 to 1.9 million in 2000 was statistically significant, as were the age-specific increases among 12 to 17 year olds and 18 to 25 year olds. The increase from 1998 to 1999 also was statistically significant, from 0.7 million to 1.3 million new users, as were the age-specific increases.

A drug intervention is a process that helps an individual to recognize the extent of their substance abuse problem. Individuals that have a drug or alcohol addiction generally are not aware that the substance abuse problem is out of control.

In 2004, 6.0 million persons were current users of psychotherapeutic drugs taken nonmedically (2.5 percent). These include 4.4 million who used pain relievers, 1.6 million who used tranquilizers, 1.2 million who used stimulants, and 0.3 million who used sedatives. These estimates are all similar to the corresponding estimates for 2003.

Among the 5.2 million adults with both SPD and substance dependence or abuse (i.e., a substance use disorder) in 2005, about half (47.0 percent) received mental health treatment or substance use treatment at a specialty facility: 8.5 percent received both treatment for mental health problems and specialty substance use treatment, 34.3 percent received only treatment for mental health problems, and 4.1 percent received only specialty substance use treatment.
