Based on combined 2000 and 2001 data, rates of past month illegal drug use in the Hispanic population aged 12 or older were 9.2 percent for Puerto Ricans, 5.8 percent for Mexicans, 3.7 percent for Cubans, and 3.6 percent for Central or South Americans).

Marijuana was the illegal drug with the highest rate of past year dependence or abuse in 2008, followed by pain relievers and cocaine. Of the 7.0 million persons aged 12 or older classified with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs in 2008, 4.2 million were dependent on or abused marijuana or hashish (representing 1.7 percent of the total population aged 12 or older, and 60.1 percent of all those classified with illegal drug dependence or abuse), 1.7 million persons were classified with dependence on or abuse of pain relievers, and 1.4 million persons were classified with dependence on or abuse of cocaine.

The number of recent new users of methamphetamine among persons aged 12 or older was 95,000 in 2008. This estimate was significantly lower than the estimate in 2002 (299,000), 2003 (260,000), 2004 (318,000), 2005 (192,000), 2006 (259,000), and 2007 (157,000). The average age of new methamphetamine users aged 12 to 49 in 2008 was 19.2 years, which was not significantly different from the average ages between 2002 and 2007.

In 2005, among persons aged 12 or older, the rate for substance dependence or abuse was 9.0 percent in large metropolitan counties, 9.9 percent in small metropolitan counties, and 8.2 percent in nonmetropolitan counties.

Most teens aged 12 to 17 believed their parents would "strongly disapprove" of their using substances. In 2006, 91.4 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day. A majority of teens (90.4 percent) reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their trying marijuana or hashish once or twice, and 89.6 percent reported their parents would strongly disapprove of their having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day. These rates of perceived parental disapproval in using substances in 2006 were similar to those reported in 2005.

The number of persons needing but not receiving specialty treatment in the past year for an illegal drug use problem in 2005 (6.3 million) was essentially the same as the estimates in 2002 (6.3 million) and 2003 (6.2 million) and also was not statistically different from the estimate in 2004 (6.6 million). The number of persons needing treatment for illegal drug use in 2005 (7.6 million) was similar to the number needing treatment in 2004 (8.1 million), 2003 (7.3 million), and 2002 (7.7 million).
