Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Among people who needed but did not receive treatment and felt they needed treatment for a substance use problem, the most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were not ready to stop using (40.0 percent) and cost or insurance barriers (34.5 percent). However, among the people who made an effort but were unable to get treatment, 42.5 percent reported cost or insurance barriers, and only 25.3 percent reported that they were not ready to stop using. These results are based on 2003 and 2004 combined data.
The number of persons aged 12 or older who smoked cigarettes for the first time within the past 12 months was 2.2 million in 2007, which was significantly lower than the estimate in 2006 (2.4 million) but significantly higher than the estimate for 2002 (1.9 million). Most new smokers in 2007 were under age 18 when they first smoked cigarettes (59.7 percent).
Numerous studies have shown an association between chronic marijuana use and increased rates of anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia.
Among those aged 50 to 59, the rate of past month illegal drug use increased from 2.7 percent in 2002 to 4.6 percent in 2008. This trend may partially reflect the aging into this age group of the baby boom cohort, whose lifetime rate of illegal drug use is higher than those of older cohorts.
Among persons aged 12 or older, whites in 2006 were more likely than other racial/ethnic groups to report current use of alcohol (55.8 percent. The rates were 47.1 percent for persons reporting two or more races, 41.8 percent for Hispanics, 40.0 percent for blacks, 37.2 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives, 36.7 percent for Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, and 35.4 percent for Asians.
The States in the top fifth for past month use of alcohol among persons aged 12 or older (i.e., highest rates) were primarily in the Northern parts of the United States, including six States in the Northeast, one in the Midwest, and one in the West. The other two were in the South (Maryland and the District of Columbia). All of the States in the lowest fifth were in the South, except for Utah (West region). Utah had the lowest rate (33.0 percent) of past month alcohol use in the Nation (Table A.7). New Jersey had the highest rate for the 12 or older age group (61.1 percent) and among those aged 26 or older (66.3 percent). The highest rate of past month use of alcohol for the 18 to 25 age group was in Rhode Island (75 percent), and North Dakota had the highest rate among teens (24.7 percent). Only the State of Massachusetts ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older) and for all persons aged 12 or older.
