Davis, California

Introduction to Davis, California

The city of Davis is located in Yolo County, California, 11 miles west of Sacramento and 72 miles northeast of San Francisco. Davis is served by two major freeways, Interstate 80 and California State Route 113. Home to University of California at Davis, the city is known as a university town with a progressive and environmentally conscious mind set. The city is also home to an off-campus branch of Sacramento City College. Davis is often referred to as the "most bicycle friendly town in the world", due to its wide streets and numerous bike paths. Since the 1960s, Davis has had one of the highest cyclist per capita ratios in the nation.

Founded in 1868, the city was originally named Davisville for Jerome C. Davis, a prominent local farmer. By the time of its incorporation in 1917, the city's name had been shortened to Davis. Historically an agricultural town, Davis became home to the University of California at Davis in 1908, at which time the university was known as the "University Farm School". Today Davis is widely noted for its contributions not only in agriculture, but in many other fields, including life sciences, biotechnology, veterinary medicine, medical technology, and engineering.

Arts, Culture, and Entertainment in Davis

One of Davis' strong points is its emphasis on parks and open spaces. The city's Central Park includes a Teen Center and the Davis Farmer’s Market, an event held every Wednesday and Saturday year round at which attendees can find gourmet foods, arts and crafts and specialty products, and can also enjoy live entertainment. The area also offers many cultural attractions. Art lovers can sample works at a number of galleries including "The Artery", a local artists’ cooperative, and at a longtime downtown site, the "Pence Gallery". Music lovers can enjoy year-round performances by The Davis Musical Theater Company and the Davis Comic Opera Company. Other local attractions include:

  • Toad Tunnel: Constructed in 1995 to prevent frogs from being killed by traffic on a newly-constructed overpass which replaced a crossing route to the reservoir, the 18-inch high and 21-inch wide tunnel went unused at first because the frogs refused to use it. When the tunnel was lit to encourage its use, some frogs died from the heat of the lamps. Another problem: word got around in the bird community about the frog-producing hole in the ground at the tunnel's exit. The tunnel still lives, however, and its exit has been decorated to resemble a toad town.
  • UC Davis Arboretum
  • Whole Earth Festival: A three-day annual music and education festival which takes place at UC Davis during Mother's Day Weekend.
  • Picnic Day: Another annual event held at the UC Davis campus every April, this is the largest student-run event in the US. Over 150 free events are featured including a large parade and a Battle of the Bands.

Proximity to the State Capital of Sacramento yields quick and easy access to several attractions there, including the following:

  • California State Railroad Museum
  • Old Sacramento
  • Sacramento Zoo
  • Sacramento Convention Center
  • Discovery Museum
  • Crocker Art Museum

Are drugs and alcohol creating destruction in your life in Davis, CA.? Do you know of someone in Davis, CA. that is going down the dark path of drug or alcohol addiction? It is very easy for someone to fall into the trap of addiction, but an individual soon realizes that it is extremely difficult to kick an addiction. That is where a Drug Rehabilitation or Alcohol Treatment Center in Davis comes in, to assist with the seemingly impossible task of treating individuals who have lost hope at ever being sober and happy again.

An Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Treatment Program in Davis treats drug addiction and alcoholism by ingraining in an addict that drugs and alcohol are not the solution to their problems and difficulties in life. It teaches an addict that all of their problems have solutions, solutions that can be found through cognitive reasoning and common sense. A Drug Rehab or Alcohol Treatment Center in Davis would put the individual in the frame of mind to overcome life's obstacles by confronting them head on, and obliterates the person's desire to use drugs as a way out.

There are many different types of in-patient and out-patient treatment programs available in Davis, CA., because each individual has different needs. Examples of programs available in Davis are Outpatient Rehab Centers, Short-term Rehab Facilities, Inpatient Treatment Centers, Long-term Treatment Centers, support group meetings, drug counseling, halfway houses and sober living.

Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Centers in Davis have a two-prong approach to treatment, both the physical and psychological causes and effects of drug and alcohol addiction. As the individual's brain adapts to the use of a psychoactive substance over time, the effect that the drug creates within the body is lessened. Due to this physical tolerance, more and more drugs or alcohol must be consumed to get high or even get a buzz.

The physical aspect of addiction is the first thing an addict will address when making the decision to seek treatment for addiction. A detoxification program in Davis, California delivered by a qualified Drug Rehab or Alcohol Rehabilitation Center will navigate the addict through the uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that are caused by abruptly coming off of drugs or alcohol. These withdrawal symptoms can last for days, weeks or months; all depending on the drug of choice and individual circumstances. Heroin withdrawal for example will take a considerable amount of time to detox and is a highly painful and uncomfortable process. Detoxification and psychological counseling right from get-go will put the individual on the right path to address issues involved with drug and alcohol abuse. This gives the individual a better chance of having a lasting recovery and prevents relapse.

An Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Rehab Center in Davis, CA. takes the individual out of the environment which may have triggered their addiction, and offers an environment that will ensure a successful recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. The individual will be given tools to better handle life situations and triggers which may have caused their drug use. When the individual completes treatment and does return home, he will do so with a new ability to handle triggers, which will no longer have an influence over him, his actions and behavior.

People who have abused drugs and alcohol shows changes in their brain. Research shows that these changes in the brain effect how an addict responds to situations. Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Facilities are aware of this and know that an addict will need more than high hopes to beat addiction. This is yet another reason why professional treatment at an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehab Program in Davis, CA. is so important.

There are a lot of reasons to seek treatment today, mainly because most people who try to kick the habit on their own will fail and just start using drugs or alcohol again. Tackling addiction and getting control of your life can be achieved by seeking treatment at a Drug Rehabilitation or Alcohol Rehab Program in Davis, CA. It doesn't have to be another failure, sobriety can be achieved with the right technology and the care and support of people who want to see you winning again. Don't think about it, do something about it and get your life or the life of someone you care about on the road to a sober and happy life today. Treatment can begin immediately by finding which option is best for you at one of the many Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Programs in Davis, CA.

Did You Know? ...
Interesting Facts and Statistics:

It has been noted that the effects of LSD can be felt within 40 to 60 minutes and lasts for up to six to eight hours.

In 2008, the rate of current illegal drug use was more than 9 times higher among teens aged 12 to 17 who smoked cigarettes in the past month (49.0 percent) than it was among teens who did not smoke cigarettes in the past month (5.3 percent).

Drug addiction can be described as a pattern of repetitive drug use that eventually results in tolerance (the need for larger doses of the drug to achieve the same effect), withdrawal (physical and cognitive effects that occur when drug use declines or stops), and compulsive drug using behavior (using drug despite serious efforts that have been put forth in order to reduce intake and despite negative consequence).

According to studies that have done by Pharmacia, "fatalities have been reported in patients that have overdosed with the combination of one single Xanax and alcohol". The levels of alcohol that were found in some of these individuals were lower than those that had formerly been associated with an alcohol-induced fatality; this is proof that Xanax greatly enhances the potency of alcohol.

An extremely large percentage of individuals that are unemployed are using an illegal drug, according to a recent government survey.

In 2008, 56.2 percent of current drinkers aged 12 to 20 reported that their last use of alcohol in the past month occurred in someone else's home, and 29.6 percent reported that it had occurred in their own home. About one third (30.8 percent) paid for the alcohol the last time they drank, including 8.3 percent who purchased the alcohol themselves and 22.3 percent who gave money to someone else to purchase it. Among those who did not pay for the alcohol they last drank, 37.4 percent got it from an unrelated person aged 21 or older, 21.1 percent from another person under 21 years of age, and 21.0 percent from a parent, guardian, or other adult family member.
