Among teens aged 12 to 17, there was evidence of regional differences in trends of marijuana use between 2002 and 2005. Current marijuana use rates declined in the Northeast, Midwest, and South between 2002 and 2005. In the West, the rates were steady between 2002 and 2004 (8.0 percent in 2002, 8.7 percent in 2003, and 9.3 percent in 2004) and then declined to 6.8 percent in 2005.
Among persons aged 12 or older in 2001, the rates for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse were highest among American Indians/Alaska Natives (13.9 percent) and among persons reporting more than one race (12.6 percent). Asians and Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders had the lowest rates for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse (3.7 and 4.9 percent, respectively).
