Heroin users who inject the drug expose themselves to additional risks, including contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B and C, and other blood-borne viruses. Chronic users who inject heroin also risk scarred or collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, abscesses, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and liver and kidney disease.

The rate of treatment for mental health problems among teens aged 12 to 17 who used illegal drugs in the past year (32.0 percent) was higher than the rate among teens who did not use illegal drugs (19.3 percent).

The States in the top fifth for past month use of alcohol among persons aged 12 or older (i.e., highest rates) were primarily in the Northern parts of the United States, including six States in the Northeast, one in the Midwest, and one in the West.
