Among the 24.3 million adults with SPD in 2007, 10.8 million (44.6 percent) used mental health services in the past year. Among all adults with SPD, 38.8 percent received a prescription medication, 27.3 percent received outpatient services, and 5.1 percent received inpatient services for a mental health problem in the past year.
Most teens aged 12 to 17 believed their parents would "strongly disapprove" of their using substances. In 2005, 91.1 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day, while the remaining 8.9 percent believed their parents would "somewhat disapprove" or "neither approve nor disapprove." A majority of teens (90.2 percent) reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their trying marijuana or hashish once or twice, and 88.9 percent reported their parents would strongly disapprove of their having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day. These rates of perceived parental disapproval in 2005 were similar to those seen in 2004.

In contrast, the percentage of past year methamphetamine users who bought it from a friend or relative increased from 25.1 percent in 2006 2007 to 30.1 percent in 2007 2008. About one in five users (21.7 percent) in 2007 2008 bought the methamphetamine they used most recently from a drug dealer or other stranger, which was comparable with the rate for 2006 2007 (20.5 percent).
Withdrawal from methamphetamine can produce effects such as craving, exhaustion, depression, mental confusion, restlessness and insomnia, deep or disturbed sleep sometimes lasting up to 48 hours, extreme hunger, psychotic reaction, and anxiety reactions.
