In 2008, adults aged 18 or older with past year MDE had higher rates of past year illegal drug use than those without MDE (27.2 vs. 13.0 percent). A similar pattern was observed for specific types of past year illegal drug use, such as the use of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or hallucinogens and the nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutics.

Cocaine-related deaths are often a result of cardiac arrest or seizures followed by respiratory arrest.

Meth is a powerful stimulant drug that increases brain activity. Short term effects, lasting up to 12 hours, include increased alertness, insomnia, hyperactivity, headache, decreased appetite, irritability, aggression, anxiety, nervousness, teeth grinding, convulsions and heart attack. Chronic abuse can lead to tooth decay, acne and skin sores (speed bumps), psychotic behavior, paranoia, hallucinations, rage, extreme violence, depression, fatal kidney and lung disorders and brain damage. Babies born to meth-using moms can be born addicted to meth and suffer birth defects, low birth weight, tremors and behavior disorders.

In some cases, withdrawal from opiates can be deadly, particularly for those individuals who are in poor health.

In 2008, an estimated 15.0 percent of past year marijuana users aged 12 or older used marijuana on 300 or more days within the past 12 months. This translates into 3.9 million persons using marijuana on a daily or almost daily basis over a 12 month period.
