A drug intervention is a process that helps an individual to recognize the extent of their substance abuse problem. Individuals that have a drug or alcohol addiction generally are not aware that the substance abuse problem is out of control.

Because individuals who are addicted to drugs may be uncertain about entering a treatment program, taking advantage of opportunities when they are willing to accept help is crucial. Side effects from chronic smoking of cocaine include hemoptysis, bronchospasm, pruritus, fever, diffuse alveolar infiltrates without effusions, pulmonary and systemic eosinophiliachest, pain, lung trauma, shortness of breath, sore throat, asthma, hoarse voice, dyspnea, and an aching, flu-like syndrome.
Based on 2004 2005 combined data, the five most often reported reasons for not receiving illegal drug or alcohol use treatment among persons who needed but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility and felt they needed treatment were (a) not ready to stop using (37.9 percent), (b) cost or insurance barriers (35.1 percent), (c) stigma (e.g., negative opinions from neighbors and community, negative effect on job) (23.9 percent), (d) did not know where to go for treatment (14.3 percent), and (e) other access barriers (e.g., no transportation, no openings in programs) (13.4 percent).
Most (62.3 percent) of the 0.9 million recent cocaine initiates were 18 or older when they first used. The average age at first use among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 19.7 years, which was similar to the average age in 2002 (19.8 years).
