Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rate of current illegal drug use was similar for boys (9.8 percent) and girls (9.7 percent). In 2006, male and female adolescents had similar rates of current marijuana use (6.8 and 6.4 percent) and nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics (3.1 and 3.5 percent, respectively).
Memory tests of people who have taken Ecstasy as compared to non-drug users have shown that the Ecstasy users had lower scores.
The number of current users of Ecstasy had decreased between 2002 and 2003, from 676,000 to 470,000, but the number did not change between 2003 and 2004 (450,000).
According to a 2006 survey among persons aged 12 or older who used pain relievers non-medically in the past 12 months, 55.7 percent reported that the source of the opiate the most recent time they used was from a friend or relative for free.
In 2008, as in prior years, the rate of current illegal drug use among persons aged 12 or older was higher for boys than for girls (9.9 vs. 6.3 percent, respectively).
