A number of family-oriented interventions have often been used in order to help prevent drug abuse. These interventions include the following: family services, family therapy, in-home family crisis services, and family education programs.

A number of studies have shown that heavy Ecstasy users experience a myriad of mental changes, scoring significantly higher on measures of obsessive traits, anxiety, paranoid thoughts, and disturbed sleep, among others.

Once the heroin is smuggled into America, drug dealers cut, or dilute, the heroin (1 part heroin to 9 to 99 parts dilutor) with sugars, starch, or powdered milk before selling it to addicts. Also, quinine is added to imitate the bitter taste of heroin so the addict cannot tell how much heroin is actually present. Heroin is often sold in single-dose bags of 0.1 gram (0.03 oz.), each costing between $5 and $46 (1992). One pound of diluted heroin yields approximately 4,500 doses.

The pattern of higher rates of current alcohol use, binge alcohol use, and heavy alcohol use among full-time college students than the rates for others aged 18 to 22 has remained consistent since 2002 .

An estimated 3.1 million people aged 12 or older (1.4 percent of the population) received some kind of treatment for a problem related to the use of alcohol or illegal drugs in the 12 months prior to being interviewed in 2001. Of these, 1.2 million received treatment for both alcohol and illegal drugs, 0.5 million received treatment for illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 1.0 million received treatment for alcohol but not illegal drugs. (Estimates by substance do not add to the total because the total includes persons who reported receiving treatment but did not report which substance the treatment was for.)
