Among people aged 12 or older, the rate of past month alcohol use in large metropolitan areas (54.4 percent) was higher than the 51.4 percent in small metropolitan areas and 44.2 percent in nonmetropolitan areas. Binge drinking was more prevalent in small metropolitan areas (23.7 percent) than in large metropolitan areas (22.3 percent) and nonmetropolitan areas (21.9 percent). The rate of heavy alcohol use was 6.1 percent in large metropolitan areas, 7.4 percent in small metropolitan areas, and 6.7 percent in nonmetropolitan areas.
In a recent study that was conducted by a group called the Eagle River Youth Coalition, it was discovered that over 40% of middle school children in the county had use inhalants within the past 30 days.
Between 2005 and 2009, among boys aged 50 and older, narcotic pain reliever involvement in emergency room visits for suicide attempts almost tripled (from 882 to 2,589 visits).
In 2008, there were 2.0 million teens (8.3 percent of the population aged 12 to 17) who had MDE during the past year. An estimated 1.5 million (6.0 percent) had MDE with severe impairment in one or more role domains (chores at home; school or work; close relationships with family; or social life).
Current use of smokeless tobacco was higher among adults aged 18 or older who were employed full time (4.6 percent) than among adults who were employed part time (1.9 percent) and the "other" employment category, which includes persons not in the labor force (2.0 percent). The rate among unemployed adults was 3.4 percent.
Among teens aged 12 to 17, 8.0 percent of Hispanics had MDE in the past year, similar to the rate for non-Hispanic teens (7.9 percent). Also, teens who reported two or more races had a lifetime MDE prevalence of 13.0 percent, while the rates for American Indians or Alaska Natives and whites were 9.3 and 8.1 percent, respectively.
