Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
In the 18 to 25 age group, the rate of past month use of these drugs was highest in Rhode Island (13.4 percent); among teens, the rate was highest in Arizona (7.2 percent) (Table B.6). Only Colorado and Kentucky were in the top fifth in all three age groups and for all persons aged 12 or older.
Although stimulants are used to treat certain medical conditions, amphetamines often are abused because they are easily manufactured in illegal laboratories.
The average annual incidence of marijuana in 2002 (averaged over the most recent 2 years and expressed as a percentage or rate per 100 person years of exposure) for all persons aged 12 or older was highest for Alaska (2.8). The top fifth was comprised mostly of States from the West (five) and from the Northeast (four). Eight States ranked in the top fifth for marijuana incidence in the 12 or older age group also ranked in the top fifth for current marijuana use (Alaska, Colorado, District of Columbia, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont). Because most initiation of marijuana takes place at age 25 or earlier (Gfroerer, Wu, & Penne, 2002), the rates of initiation in the 26 or older age group were much lower than those in the 12 to 17 and 18 to 25 age groups: 0.1, 6.9, and 6.8, respectively. The District of Columbia reported the highest rate among teens aged 12 to 17 (9.4), while New Hampshire reported the highest rate among persons aged 18 to 25 (11.8). In the 12 or older age group, eight States from the South were ranked in the lowest fifth for incidence of marijuana.
In 2005, current cigarette smoking among teens aged 12 to 17 and young adults aged 18 to 25 was more prevalent among whites than blacks (12.8 vs. 6.5 percent for 12 to 17 year olds and 44.2 vs. 28.7 percent for 18 to 25 year olds). Among adults aged 26 or older, however, whites and blacks used cigarettes at about the same rate (24.8 and 27.0 percent, respectively). The rates for Hispanics were 9.1 percent among teens, 31.9 percent among young adults, and 22.2 percent among those aged 26 or older.
The main categories of prescription drug abuse and drug rehab addiction treatment are behavioral and pharmacological. Behavioral treatments teach individuals how to function without abusing prescription drugs , how to handle cravings, and how to avoid the situations that could lead to drug use in order to prevent a relapse, and how to handle a relapse should it occur. When delivered effectively, behavioral treatments - such as individual counseling, group or family counseling, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, they can help patients improve their personal relationships and ability to function successfully in their lives.
In 2006, approximately one in eight teens aged 12 to 17 (11.4 percent) reported that they had participated in drug, tobacco, or alcohol prevention programs outside of school in the past year. However, the prevalence of past month use of illegal drugs, marijuana, cigarettes, or binge alcohol was not significantly lower among those who participated in these prevention programs outside of school (8.9 percent, 6.1 percent, 8.9 percent, and 9.8 percent, respectively) than among those who did not (9.9 percent, 6.7 percent, 10.6 percent, and 10.4 percent, respectively).
