The definition of a person needing but not receiving treatment for an alcohol problem is that he or she meets the criteria for abuse of or dependence on alcohol according to the DSM-IV, but has not received specialty treatment for an alcohol problem in the past year. The percentage of persons aged 12 or older needing but not receiving treatment for alcohol problems (7.2 percent) in 2002.2003 was almost 3 times larger than the corresponding percentage for persons with illegal drug problems (2.7 percent) (Tables B.19 and B.20).
In 2006, teens aged 12 to 17 who had MDE during the past year were more likely to report daily cigarette use in comparison with those who did not have MDE during the past year (5.2 vs. 2.5 percent). Similarly, teens who had past year MDE were more likely to report heavy use of alcohol than those who did not have MDE (4.5 vs. 2.2 percent).
Rates of illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older varied by geographic division in 2001. The lowest rate of illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse was observed in the East South Central division (6.0 percent), and the highest rate was in the New England division (9.1 percent).
