Interesting Facts and Statistics:

There were 2.4 million new past-year users of marijuana as of 2009.

The percentage of the population using illegal drugs increased from 6.3 percent in 1999 and 2000 to 7.1 percent in 2001. Between 2000 and 2001, statistically significant increases were noted for the current use of marijuana (4.8 to 5.4 percent), cocaine (0.5 to 0.7 percent), pain relievers (1.2 to 1.6 percent), and tranquilizers (0.4 to 0.6 percent). A change in NHSDA questions on hallucinogens caused the estimated rate of use of this category of drugs to increase from 0.4 to 0.6 percent between 2000 and 2001.

Morphine is reported to be one of the most effective drugs that is used for the treatment of severe pain and remains the standard against which the newer analgesics are measured.

Methamphetamine makes the user feel energetic and alert, when it is taken in smaller doses; additionally they sometimes feel extremely confident-even powerful.

Young adults aged 18 to 25 had the highest rate of current use of a tobacco product (43.9 percent) and of each specific product compared with teens aged 12 to 17 and adults aged 26 or older. In 2006, the rates of past month use among young adults were 38.4 percent for cigarettes, 12.1 percent for cigars, 5.2 percent for smokeless tobacco, and 1.3 percent for pipe tobacco. The rate of current use of a tobacco product by young adults decreased from 2002 to 2006 (45.3 vs. 43.9 percent), as did the rate of cigarette use (40.8 vs. 38.4 percent). However, the rate of current use of cigars by young adults was higher in 2006 than in 2002 (12.1 vs. 11.0 percent).

As in prior years, men were more likely to report current illegal drug use than women (8.7 vs. 5.5 percent) in 2001. However, rates of nonmedical psychotherapeutics use were similar for boys (2.2 percent) and girls (2.0 percent), consistent with previous findings for these drugs.
