Interesting Facts and Statistics:

The very thought of not using may make some individuals panic stricken. They may have abused one prescription drug or another for such a long period of time that being intoxicated feels quite natural, or they may fear the discomfort of withdrawal.

The rate of current illegal drug use among persons aged 12 or older in 2008 (8.0 percent) was the same as the rate in 2007 (8.0 percent).

In 2005, the number of persons aged 12 or older needing treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem was 23.2 million (9.5 percent of the population aged 12 or older). Of these, 2.3 million (0.9 percent of persons aged 12 or older and 10.0 percent of those who needed treatment) received treatment at a specialty facility. Thus, there were 20.9 million persons (8.6 percent of the population aged 12 or older) who needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem but did not receive treatment at a specialty substance abuse facility in the past year.

8.9% of the population that are over the age of 12 reported inhalant use.

In 2006, 15.8 million adults (7.2 percent of persons aged 18 or older) had at least one MDE in the past year. After a statistically significant decline in the rate of past year MDE between 2004 and 2005 (8.0 and 7.3 percent, respectively), the rate of past year MDE was stable between 2005 and 2006.

Screening for prescription drug abuse could easily be incorporated into routine medical visits by asking direct questions about substance abuse history and current prescriptions.
