The number of 12-17 year olds admitted to treatment for meth addiction more than doubled between 1994 and 2004.

Inpatient drug rehab treatment provides a structured program that often involves both individual counseling and treatment groups. The goal of an inpatient drug rehab treatment program is to help the person to be sober and to prepare the individual for a life back in the community. The number of persons needing but not receiving specialty treatment in the past year for an illegal drug use problem in 2005 (6.3 million) was essentially the same as the estimates in 2002 (6.3 million) and 2003 (6.2 million) and also was not statistically different from the estimate in 2004 (6.6 million). The number of persons needing treatment for illegal drug use in 2005 (7.6 million) was similar to the number needing treatment in 2004 (8.1 million), 2003 (7.3 million), and 2002 (7.7 million).

While individuals over the age of 30 continue to make up the majority of heroin addicts in the United States, the fast growing heroin demographic is among young people age 17-21.

Individuals addicted to heroin who stop using the drug may experience withdrawal symptoms which include heroin craving, restlessness, muscle and bone pain, and vomiting.

In 2007, an estimated 22.3 million persons (9.0 percent of the population aged 12 or older) were classified with substance dependence or abuse in the past year based on criteria specified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV). Of these, 3.2 million were classified with dependence on or abuse of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 3.7 million were dependent on or abused illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 15.5 million were dependent on or abused alcohol but not illegal drugs.
