Stamford, Connecticut

Introduction to Stamford, Connecticut

Located in Fairfield County, Connecticut, Stamford, is known as "the city that works". It was incorporated in 1893 and is most famous for being home to the electric dry shaver industry. Stamford is located on the southwestern tip of Connecticut, and is well liked by residents for being less than an hour away from New York City and still one of the safest cities in the U.S. (FBI census, 2004).

Stamford is a part of the New Haven Line on the Metro-North Railroad, which is the commuter rail system for metropolitan NYC. It is a smooth transition spot for faster trains into the city. There are also six surrounding major airports within an hour's drive, including the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and the Newark Liberty International Airport in northern New Jersey.

In southern Stamford, Interstate 95 serves as the major highway between Boston and NYC. In the northern part of the city, the Merritt Parkway is another major road serving the city. The Merritt Parkway has been named an historic road due to the architecture of its overpasses. These bridges do not permit truck passage because of their height, effectively limiting the road to transit for commuters rather than commercial transportation.
