Rates of cocaine use by college students over the previous 5 years has varied between 2.0% of all students in 1994 to 4.8% in 2000.
People's perceptions of the risk of binge drinking were moderately related to their actual rates of binge drinking at the State level in 2002.2003. Eight of the States (Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Wisconsin) with the highest rates of binge use of alcohol in 2002.2003 also were States with the lowest perceived risk of binge drinking for the population aged 12 or older. Similarly Utah, the State with the lowest rate of binge use of alcohol among persons aged 12 or older (15.9 percent), also had the highest rate of perceived risk of that behavior (50.9 percent).
About 1.6 million adults (0.7 percent of the population 18 years or older) received inpatient care for mental health problems during the past year. This was significantly lower than the rate of inpatient treatment in 2005 (1.0 percent, or 2.1 million adults). Declines were particularly prominent among women (1.1 percent in 2005 vs. 0.7 percent in 2006), persons living in the South (1.3 vs. 0.7 percent), persons with a family income of less than $20,000 (2.7 vs. 1.9 percent), and persons receiving government assistance (3.3 vs. 2.2 percent).

Another 18.1 percent reported they got the drug from just one doctor. Only 4.1 percent got the pain relievers from a drug dealer or other stranger, and 0.5 percent reported buying the drug on the Internet. Among those who reported getting the pain reliever from a friend or relative for free, 81.0 percent reported in a follow-up question that the friend or relative had obtained the drugs from just one doctor.
